John Preston cello recording
A handsome English cello of great character, made for the shop of Thomas Preston (d.1834) with a lively, even and colourful tone. The cello is in exceptionally pure condition, with its original neck, pegs and bass bar. The varnish is a beautiful deep orange-brown.

Thomas Preston’s father, John (d.1798) was an instrument maker and music publisher. His son, Thomas, was not a maker, but joined the business in 1789 and moved the shop from 98, The Strand, to 71, Dean Street, where he sold instruments made by local makers, and was a prolific music publisher until his death in 1834.
