A seminar on stringed instrument care This seminar is structured around the disassembly of a specially prepared violin. Robin gradually takes the instrument to pieces, showing its different components and handing them to the group for examination. The violin provides a focus for a wealth of information about instrument design and function and also stimulates a flood of questions from the group about all aspects of instrument care and set up. Robin also brings a range of materials and tools which give an insight into the violin making process. Players who attend the seminar will acquire a deeper understanding of how their instrument works and how to handle and care for it better. Specific topics will include: tone production, the function of sound post and bass bar, the principles of good set up, bridge and fingerboard shaping, bridge position and stance, string fitting and lubrication of string grooves, peg malfunction and lubrication, bow hair anatomy and the reasons for re-hairing, how to use rosin effectively and how to care for varnish. Participants are encouraged to bring their own instruments as they may wish to ask questions about them during or after the seminar. One of the great advantages of this hands-on, object based approach is that it elicits active questioning and focussed participation from the entire group. The seminar has been enthusiastically received by numerous regional ESTA groups, string orchestras, students at Pro Corda and Birmingham Conservatoire and the 30th International Music Course at Vila-Seca Conservatoire, Spain. The seminar takes 60 to 90 minutes. Feedback from workshop participants: 'Beautifully delivered... Excellent - lots of new information and good tips... what a pity he doesn't live locally - can he be persuaded?' Robin is happy to design a seminar based on your specific requirements. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. |
