Technical cello articles

T E C H N I C A L   C E L L O   A R T I C L E S

In this section (using links in the left hand side bar) you’ll be able to browse through a series of scientific but, we hope, approachable articles about the cello.  Topics include bridge design, the function of the sound post and how to measure and assess the size of cellos.  We look into the causes of and cures for wolf notes and investigate the significance of sound post cracks in the back and front of instruments and their effect on an instrument’s value.  Cello varnish also comes under the microscope, and we try to explain the effect of humidity on cellos and how to monitor and protect your instrument from humidity extremes.  All our articles are illustrated by the wonderful artist and illustrator, Michael Edwards.
