Baroque Bow Maker Biographies:
Modern bow maker biographies
JOHN ANIANO made his earliest bows under the guidance of William Salchow
and he has worked for bow maker Yung Chin since early 2002. John’s
modern bows are made using a personal model inspired by Pajeot and Adam.
Prizes: two certificates of merit (va & vc) VSA 2004.
PIETER AFFOURTIT studied baroque violin at the Hague and spent ten years
as a freelance musician before studying bow making with Basil de Visser
in Amsterdam. He has combined the careers of baroque bow maker and
musician since 1997.
PHILIP DAVIS is a luthier and bow maker based in Toronto. After training
in sculpture and cabinet making he spent from 1975 to 1978 in England
researching the construction of period stringed instruments. He also
studied in Germany in 1983 with master luthier and bow maker JJ
Schroeder.
ANDREW DIPPER is a skilled restorer, luthier, bow maker, historian and
writer. After studying sculpture and violin making in London and Cremona,
he founded Andrew Dipper Restorations in London, England in 1975. He
relocated to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1990 where he joined Claire
Givens Violins, Inc. as Vice President.
CHRISTOPHER ENGLISH trained as a bow maker with Robert Shallock in
Portland Oregon 1980-1982 and attended New Hampshire bow making
workshops with William Salchow in 1984 and l985. Christopher has
specialised in making baroque bows since 1984 and he lives and works in
Port Townsend, Washington, USA.
MICHEL GROPPE began making baroque bows after extensive study at museums
throughout Europe. In 1983 he established Atelier Groppe in Metz, France
which specialises in making copies of bows dating from 1650 to 1800.
ANDREAS GRÜTTER studied bowmaking in Cremona with Giovanni Lucchi and
then worked with William Salchow in New York. For the last twenty years
he has been making bows at his workshop in Amsterdam.
MICHEL JAMONNEAU studied bow making with Bernard Ouchard at Mirecourt
School of Lutherie and Bowmaking and has been established in Nantes
since 1999. He makes both modern and period bows and is also a respected
restorer and repairer.
ANDRE KLAASSEN fell in love with historical bows in 1986 and has since
made hundreds of bows which are played by professionals and serious
amateurs throughout continental Europe. His aim is to make a bow to
please the hand, ear and eye of player and listener.
GERHARD LANDWEHR trained as a biologist before a deep interest in early
music drew him to making and repairing instruments and bows. He has been
making bows since 1981 and bases his work on detailed research of
historical models, aiming to make the right bow for a specific musical
style.
STEPHEN MARVIN was introduced to bow making by William Salchow in New
York and he has specialised in making historical and period bows for
over twenty years. More recently he has made some special modern bows
after early 19th century models. He lives and works in Toronto.
RÜDIGER PFAU studied at conservatoire and decided to become a bow maker
in 1988. After completing his apprenticeship and passing his Masters
exam, he worked with N. Nillsson and Pierre Guillaume before setting up
his own workshop in Vogtland in 1996. Prizes: Gold medal (modern viola
bow) Mittenwald 2005.
DAVID VAN EDWARDS has been making bows for over twenty years,
specializing in historic bows of all types. He is also a renowned lute
maker. He lives and works in Norwich.
JUTTA WALCHER was an apprentice with Garner Wilson and then worked with
Matthew Coltman. Since 1995 her mentor has been bow maker Peter Oxley.
Prizes: bronze Manchester 1998 and fourth prize (va) Paris 1999.
MICHAEL VANN trained in New York City in the shop of the world renowned
master bow maker William Salchow. Since embarking on his career in 1975
he has won six international and more than a dozen Canadian awards for
his bows.
