James & Henry Banks cello 1802

Length of back: 28¾" (730mm)
String length: 26¾" (680mm)
Price: £45,000 (Cello Exchange)

The instrument is very pure and original, the tone is deep, rich and consistent across the instrument and projects very well.  The varnish is a dark brown with a beautiful craqueleur.  The cello is branded J & H BANKS in many places internally and also below the button.  This fine example of the later work of the Banks family was noted by the Hills on account of the inscription on the back beneath the button: 'Varnished by Thomas Dodd' which supports the theory of a working relationship between Dodd and the Banks family at this time.

Mario Maccaferri cello 1929

This cello has just arrived; more details will be published
in the near future.
