A beautiful example of the work of Gaetano Gadda in very good condition.  The tone of this cello is exceptionally powerful, rich, clear and colourful and the fine varnish is a transparent orange-brown.  The scroll is later, and by another hand.  Gaetano Gadda was the only true pupil of Stefano Scarampella and became his master's acknowledged successor when Scarampella retired due to ill health in 1924.  Certificate from Eric Blot.

This exceptional cello is number 14 out of 33  'Violoncellos of the First Class'  by Simon Andrew Forster and was commissioned by the Hon. Major Legge in 1836 for the Bishop of Oxford.  It is in  extremely good condition, with beautiful warm orange-brown varnish over a golden ground.  The tone is rich, colourful and powerful, with excellent projection in a concert hall. Hill certificate.
